Why choose Through Tote Bag Knitting Pattern?

A tote bag is a really handy item to own; I know I can never have enough of them to store and carry everything I need to. Whenever I go to grab one to take shopping, I find that I don't have any spare. My children use them to take shoes and boots or snacks and drinks to school and other activities they do, my husband sorts wires and gadgets into them and I suspect quite a few of them are holding my WiPs too! Do you have that problem?

Bags are also great fun to knit because you can add all sorts of fun details and relax without worrying if it'll fit you. I really like them as a way to try out a new technique and I love having a new handmade bag to carry about, showing off my craft skills as I go!

The main square of the design adds texture in a simple, elegant manner to an otherwise very classic knitted square. There is nothing uncommon in the techniques used so it will be an unthreatening make even for very new knitters, yet it has an eye-catching appeal even amongst more complex squares. Newer lace knitters may like to use a lifeline before eyelet rounds for reassurance if not confident to pick up any dropped yarn overs.

It works well as a single square mini-tote or a 4 patch tote bag and those are just the start of the customisations possible! You'll find a page worth of suggestions for how you could use the pattern to make a bag that exactly suits your style, crafting preferences and the bag's intended purpose.

I worked up the Mini-Tote in Lily's Sugar 'n Cream yarn, a sturdy aran/worsted cotton yarn in a great range of colours. It was perfect to create a bag that won't be saggy or be difficult to wash if needed. The textures showed up really well and the finished bag feels soft and strong.

You can also make the bags in other yarn weights and textures, typically adjusting the needle size to be a little smaller than usual to create a dense fabric. In fact, sample maker Amanda worked up the four-patch version in Scheepjes Metropolis, a sock type yarn that's fine textured and springy on tiny 2.5mm needles. It looked great!
