Why make the Fairy Ring Yoked Cowl Crochet Pattern

This was such a fascinating design to create and I think it's perfect for the in between seasons when we're never quite sure if the weather we leave home in will last the day and need lightweight neck accessories to help us keep stray breezes at bay.

A yoked cowl is an interesting make to cosy up on cooler days over your warm weather clothing if you like to get your summer favourites out before the temperatures are quite ready. The way the pattern is written enables it to be adjusted to fit any neckline exactly and so I think it will work well for so many different wearers and different occasions. If you're making a custom size rather than one of the suggested sizes included in the pattern, you'll want to have the intended wearer handy before fastening off to check the size.

Its bold textures and fun stitches could work with a casual tee or a more formal jacket for an evening occasion too, and it's sure to be a talking point! I'm looking forward to wearing this throughout the spring; it's going to be so much fun to wear.

This pattern works up quite fast and its a great project if working the same stitch over and over makes you want to put your project aside and start something new. It has plenty of different stitches so there's no chance of getting bored. In fact, I'm already itching to make another as I enjoyed making the sample so much!

How challenging is the Fairy Ring Yoked Cowl Crochet Pattern?

It's not a difficult make but I think you may need to put your expectations about the construction out of your mind and just follow the pattern. Also there is some counting in the yoke on alternate rounds so you might want to work the first few repeats when you can focus so you don't go astray. Confession: I nearly forgot to weave in the ends of this before wearing it. I was so excited to try it on as soon as it was complete and then I folded it up and put it aside to keep it nice and clean and away from colourful fluff of other projects and it was only as I was unpacking it to take a photo that I saw the loose ends and remembered!

I worked up the sample in @cascadeyarns Heritage, a sock type yarn that has the fine, smooth texture necessary for the details in this design and a wonderful range of colours. The colours Royal and Indigo-Violet here are two of my favourite shades (I actually have dresses to match both of them) and were perfect contrast for each other.

The Fairy Ring Yoked Cowl offers plenty of opportunity to make something unique that perfectly suits the intended wearer. The pattern includes tips to adjust the length of the neck ribbing and/or the frill; create a plainer cowl; create a custom sized cowl or matching cuff. You can also experiment with varied colours and textures of yarn, with wonderful results as in the examples below.

The following images of cowls are used with kind permission of two talented makers: cream-brown cowl by Rachel (Pearledwing on Instagram) and grey-blue cowl by Emma (Tortietreblemakerdesigns on Instagram), who paired them with the beautiful Amanita Sweater and Hat, designed by Rachel.
