I am really pleased to be able to let you know that my Large Flower motif crochet patterns feature in Simply Crochet Magazine issue 157, in fact they even made it onto the cover! This was such a fun design to create, and I was really delighted to receive a copy of the issue on the release date, 27th December 2024 and see the pattern for the set in print. The issue includes the full patterns for both flowers plus a fantastic choice of of cosy winter projects that are well suited to this season's crafting. Do take a look and see if your next project might be in there, especially if you are keen to get back into crafting after making gifts at the end of last year!
Why Make the Large Flower Motif Crochet Patterns?
These appliqués are a fantastic way to revive plain clothing items that you're bored of or perhaps any that have a stain or tear that needs disguising. You could also use them as coasters or small mats or join them end to end (the petals make them look like they're round but actually they're quite octagonal) to make a scarf.
Their bold textures and fun stitches could work on a casual tee or denim jacket as well as on a pullover or perhaps on patch pockets of a coat or trousers and for an evening occasion one could be added to the shoulder of a chiffon dress, maybe with some crystal beads. Simply Crochet send their samples back to the designers after photographing them and I'm looking forward to having these ones! What do you think I should do with them?
The patterns work up quite fast and these flowers are a great project if working the same stitch over and over makes you want to put your project aside and start something new! Both designs have plenty of different stitches plus colour changes which really seem to add life to the flowers, so there's no chance of getting bored. In fact, I'm already keen to make some extras!
After the first couple of flowers are made the pattern will feel familiar and be the kind of relaxing make you could work on at craft night, in front of the TV or when travelling but for the first of each design you might need a bit more concentration due to the variety of stitches used and different places they are worked.
I worked up the sample in in Drops Muskat, a loosely plied mercerised DK cotton yarn that has a lovely smooth texture and lets the details in this design take centre stage. It has a really nice range of colours but you can use up any scraps you like, mixing colours, textures and even different weight, so this project an be a perfect stash buster. My original swatch for the design was make in a mixture of DK, Aran and some thinner yarns crocheted with two or three strands held together. To keep things more coherent in the finished piece I used a small amount of a vivid light green in each of the flowers and used different shades of the same colour within each motif.
Seeing the finished project in the magazine was lovely. I love the photos and the model's hair style and make-up really work well with the overall style of the top and its details too.
