The story behind the Tunisian Corset Belt Tunisian crochet pattern
A long time ago, when I was a very new knitter I made an ankle length cable knitted dress. It turned out very well but also very heavy and I wanted to make a belt for it to help support it. I lost touch with the plans for that while I was pregnant and had young children but recently got the dress out again and decided that Tunisian Crochet would be the perfect technique to make its belt.
Get your perfect fit
I came up with a corset style and a plan for embellishments too and I really want this to work for everyone, so the pattern is written for custom sizing allowing you to make it exactly right for your waist size and the size of gap you want in the lacing and also in any width. This also offers you some flexibility to use a different sized yarn too. IT's very customisable. A table in the pattern helps you work out your own perfect fit and common adult sized are also supplied as pre-filled measurements.
I loved making this on my livestreams on Twitch this year. It was so much fun. The simple pattern instructions meant I could chat with those watching without making a mistake, so perhaps this is a great project to take to craft group or anywhere else that you'll want to craft and chat at the same time. I was also able to make clips from the livestream recordings so you'll find links in the pattern for parts where a visual aid could help.
An ideal pattern to learn Tunisian Crochet
If you're a skilled crocheter or knitter who loves to make creative, intricate and fascinating projects that hold your attention throughout, it can be frustrating and demotivating to work on a repetitive, plain learner project that you don't even want when learning a new technique like Tunisian crochet but it's also scary to commit yarn and time to a more complex project that you're learning as you go. In this case, the Tunisian Corset Belt is a great project for you to learn Tunisian crochet. The regularly spaced increase and decrease rows make great milestones, add interest to the project and are ideal for learning a matching increase and decrease for the Tunisian Simple stitch. There are videos and photos included with the pattern to help you with the techniques one you have the body of the belt complete, then you get to be creative with your more familiar craft skills. There's an option for a knitted finish if you prefer that to the crochet finish used in the sample.
I've added some customisation tips to the pattern too: for different sizes, embellishments and fastening options. I love seeing how creative people can be and seeing how different versions of the same pattern turn out to suit the user's style and use preferences is one of the best parts of being a designer. You can keep the belt plain or embellish it however your creativity suggests. A couple of appliqué flower video tutorials are included to start you off.
Thanks to the Testers
I was fortunate to work with some great testers including Rachel (@PearledWing on Instagram) and Jessica McBee (@laughing.sisters in Instagram) who gave feedback on how the pattern could be improved before being released. I really loved to see how different their versions turned out, and was impressed at Jessica's lovely even tension on her first Tunisian Crochet project. I was so pleased to have a newcomer to Tunisian crochet test this pattern and pleased that she mentioned finding the photos and videos linked in the the pattern helpful. The testers gave such helpful and clear feedback to improve the pattern for you. Here's a few photos of their finished work. Many thanks to them for their help in getting this pattern ready for publication and for the lovely photos of their beautiful finished projects. I'm always so grateful for my testers' work!
