Introducing Persica Bag knitted bag pattern

Inspired by the textures and colour contrasts of a peach kernel, I created a bag with a soft but interesting shape and a pattern featuring simple stripes of bold contrast colour and added texture. The visual effect of stripes running in different directions plus intersecting i-cord is eye-catching and the interesting construction is functional, with seams, cast off edges and decorative features supporting the shape of the soft, knitted fabric. Combining interesting construction and simple stitches equals an enjoyable project that can be worked with focus and delight in the process and also fits into a meditative, relaxing craft session.

The colours

I enjoyed working with the King Cole Finesse Cotton Silk DK yarn and seeing the bag's unusual design take shape. The yarn was absolutely perfect with its minimal stretch, slight shine and gentle crinkle texture adding extra interest to this knitted bag pattern.

The starting point: sketch of the design

I was surprised and pleased at how much the stripes stood out using just two shades of pink. Originally I had thought of using a soft peach colour with a deep wine red contrast. It had felt a bit of a risk to go for a more subtle combination but I loved the results. Expect to see more of my projects using multiple shades of the same colour. Can you spot the other changes I made from my original sketch? Let me know in the comments at the end!

Making the Cords

Using an i-cord mill to make pink i-cord
Using an i-cord mill

I used an i-cord mill for my bag, which was a fun fast way to make i-cord but the pattern includes instructions for knitting i-cord so there's no need to buy one or maybe you prefer using one of those French knitting spools, and perhaps even have a a small child willing to operate it! I know that lots of people who buy my patterns love to crochet as well as knit and there's a really fast way of making crochet cord you could try too. Here are some videos to help you decide:
